The L4 story ends with “I blocked a reckless launch and I was right.” The L6 story ends with a proportionate mitigation that shipped close to the original date, plus a decision system that makes the next call easier. The signal is judgment: when to push, how hard, on what evidence, and how you protected delivery while you did it.
What a strong answer covers
In 90 to 120 seconds, land six things: the delivery pressure and why it was legitimate; the specific risk (a concrete user harm, not “AI safety” in the abstract); what you personally measured or proposed; the proportional mitigation or staged path; the decision and its measurable outcome; and what you learned about escalating under uncertainty.
What an L4 answer sounds like
“I noticed accuracy was low and told my manager we should test more before launch. We delayed and fixed it.”
Responsible, but it never shows how you judged severity, moved the decision, or weighed the cost of delay.
What an L5 answer adds
An L5 answer names a concrete failure mode, quantifies the exposure, and proposes the smallest action that resolves the uncertainty: a launch-blocking slice with a rollback threshold, a targeted red-team or shadow evaluation, a first launch limited to a lower-risk segment, human review on high-consequence outputs, or a scope cut that preserves the date. It shows how product, legal, or leadership reached the decision, not just that you were right.
What an L6 answer adds
An L6 answer changes the decision system rather than one launch: a recurring risk review tied to severity and reversibility, quality gates that fix the incentive rewarding speed without consequences, and influence across teams without centralizing every call. The strongest version admits where an earlier safety concern was too conservative and updates the framework accordingly.
Tells that get you a strong-hire vote
- You respect the stakeholder’s delivery constraint.
- The risk is specific, testable, and proportional to the mitigation.
- You bring evidence before you escalate rhetoric.
- You propose a reversible path, not an indefinite veto.
- You can say what would have changed your own position.
Tells that get you down-leveled
- Everyone else is careless and you are the lone adult.
- “Safety” is invoked with no concrete user harm behind it.
- You escalate before you try to collaborate.
- You never acknowledge the cost of delay.
- The story ends with “leadership agreed I was right.”
Common follow-ups
- What if leadership had chosen to launch anyway?
- How did you decide the risk was severe enough to block?
- What evidence would have made you support the launch?
- Did your mitigation actually reduce harm, or just delay it?
